Verruca Treatment

What Is A Verruca?

A verruca, also known as a ‘plantar wart’, is a common type of wart which presents on the foot. They are highly contagious, but equally, very common.

They are harmless little things, but can cause discomfort, especially if they present on weight baring areas. Most people will experience a verruca at some point in their lives.

Appearance And Cause

How does a verruca look?

Typically looks like a circular patch on the sole of the foot (lots of people might confuse them with corns). May feature small black dots, and resembles a cauliflower.

What causes a verruca?

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the underlying cause of a verruca (also known as plantar warts). A highly contagious virus which thrives in damp and moist environments.

Anyone can develop a verruca, and they are particularly prevalent amongst children. If left untreated, they are spread and become cluster warts, present as a mosaic wart appearance or several may present over the feet.

We do advise however, that in the case of children, plantar warts/VP may resolve on their own, generally within a 2 year time-frame without any form of treatment.

Can Verrucas Be Treated?

The good news is, yes they can!

Verrucas can spread quickly, so ideally, it is good to know your treatment options.

Here at West Wales Podiatry clinic we have a couple of options;

Simple debridement, and a topical acid called silver nitrate is applied. This is an ongoing treatment and would need several treatments every fortnight for continuity.

The other option is a fairly new treatment called SWIFT Microwave Therapy – a process which has a success rate of 85% – and works faster than other, more traditional methods.

Swift Microwave Therapy

A unique selling point for us here at West Wales Podiatry. We are the only clinic in Pembrokeshire, and wider counties, Carmarthen and Cardigan which can offer you this service.

Whether it be a troublesome verruca (on your foot), or a wart (on your hand) – We are able to help.

Swift is a safe, non-invasive treatment.

This relatively new technology uses the principle of microwave therapy, when applied to the lesion, to trigger an immune response within the body to target the verrucas. Longstanding, or new lesions, if you are keen to get rid, this might be the service you need.

Please find the link attached for you to read up on SWIFT – as this is an expensive treatment, we want you to be 100% sure it is right for you.
